Clashes took place between two groups of Awami League men over attending the election campaign of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Barishal.
Supporters of Mehendiganj Upazila unit Awami League`s general secretary Dr Shammi Ahmed, who is also the ruling party nominated candidate for Barishal-4 constituency and supporters of independent candidate Pankaj Nath, who is the outgoing lawmaker of the constituency, locked into an altercation on Friday afternoon.
Several people were injured on both sides. Among them, one Siraj Sikder, 58, was declared dead after being taken to the hospital, said Barishal`s Kotwali Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Arisul Haque.
The deceased was a resident of Kuralia village of Hijla upazila of Barisal.
Followers of Pankaj and Shammi, both side claimed the slain Siraj as their man.
OC Arisul Haque said said Siraj fell ill at the rally ground.
Initially it was believed that he died due to heart attack, he added.
"The matter will be investigated and action will be taken," the OC furthered.
